I’ve been spending way too much time breaking Google’s new image model today. You’ve probably seen the clickbait headlines from the big tech blogs claiming that Nano Banana 2 is free and that Midjourney is finally dead.

Look, as someone who spends way too much time tweaking UI gradients, I’m usually the first to roll my eyes at these “game-changing” AI updates. But this one? It’s… actually not terrible.
As a designer who’s usually skeptical of “free” AI tools (they usually end up being a subscription trap), I wanted to see if this one actually lives up to the noise.
The Real Cost: Free vs. Pro
First, let’s clear up the confusion about the money. While everyone is shouting that Nano Banana 2 is free, the reality depends on how you use it.
1K images run $0.0672, 2K is $0.101, and 4K is $0.151. For reference, Pro was $0.134 per 1K. Not bank-breaking, but definitely not “infinite free.” You can actually test it for free on the A2E platform.

The bit that actually shocked me…
It’s the Character Consistency. Usually, AI is like a toddler with amnesia—it forgets what your character looked like five seconds ago. But with Banana 2, I managed to keep a consistent brand mascot across four different action shots. It saved me about two hours of manual Photoshop cleanup. That alone is worth the hype.
The “Google” Aesthetic Problem
Is it better than Midjourney? Honestly, it depends on whether you vibe with that “Corporate Clean” aesthetic. While MJ has this gritty, artistic soul, Nano Banana 2 feels like a talented intern from a top design school. Everything is polished and perfect, but it lacks a bit of character.
